- Moving the Royal Oak Historical Society Museum
ROYAL OAK, MI – January 30th, 2010 – Professional Movers.com co-owners and managing partners Andrew Androff and Patrick Crowley donated boxes, trucks, and an experienced team of museum movers to help provide a seamless and careful relocation of the Royal Oak Historical Society’s treasured collection. It was a move that had been 15 years in the making and the result of the persistent community leaders working together with the City Commission and Mayor to broker a rental agreement that turned the Northwood Fire Station into the permanent home for the Royal Oak Historical Museum.
It was a creative and adaptive way to reuse a building that had been previously unoccupied since 2003. More importantly, the lease offered residents and visitors a place to encourage historical research, and a chance to collect and preserve historical materials.
Andrew Androff worked with Muriel Versagi, the museum curator, to provide consultation services and create and build a custom move plan. The move included the relocation of hundreds of local historical materials such as, original maps, charters, books, pictures, and furniture from the museum. In addition, there was over-sized and unusual shaped display cases and glass cabinetry that required careful packing and proper staging. As part of the move, Professional Movers.com supplied packing materials and provided a packing seminar to the historical society volunteers.
On move day, everything went according to schedule. Professional Movers.com utilized 10 movers, 2 forty-eight foot moving trailers, and 2 twenty-six foot moving trucks. In addition, movers supplied specialized moving equipment like four-wheelers, speed pack boxes, premium pads, panel carts, stretch-wrap, picture boxes, and dollies. The moving team worked in unison with an organized army of historical society volunteers to place boxes, set-locate furniture, un-wrap glass, and rebuild artwork walls. The new museum facility has 1,800 square feet of exhibition space, a library reference room, and three annually exhibits.
“This move meant a lot to me personally”, said Andrew Androff, “Royal Oak has such a rich history and the members of the Historical Society are passionate people who care about our city. It was a pleasure and an honor for Professional Movers.com to be part of such an extraordinary moment for the City of Royal Oak and the Historical Society.”
